Junior Golf Website update March 2019

Ormskirk Golf Club has a thriving Junior Section comprising of 45 Members and growing all the time, of the 45 total 12 are young girls.  Juniors are able to join the Club when they reach the age of 8, from the age of 8 to 11 the Subscription is currently £50 and from 12 to 18 years of age £150. One of the advantages of joining as a Junior is that the joining fee on reaching adulthood (currently 1.5 times subscription) is waived. All Juniors regardless of age are welcome to join in on our popular Tuesday evening programme which runs from 6pm to 8pm commencing end of April through to end of August. This year we are planning to start on Tuesday 30th April. They do not have to be Junior Members, in fact sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, close friends’ children and any youngsters keen on getting into golf are more than welcome to enrol. We encourage our Juniors to learn the fundamentals of golf through professional coaching combined with skills-based activities such as chipping, putting, target golf as well as time spent on the main golf course playing a shortened course. We encourage a competitive spirit and most activities are competition based. We conclude our Tuesday evenings with a prizegiving and presentation ceremony in the Clubhouse. From an early age our Juniors are encouraged to have fun whilst playing golf but also to abide by the high standards we expect in terms of good golfing etiquette and manners whilst on the golf course and at the Club in general. We believe that these are helpful life skills to be learned during their formative years.

The 2018 season was enthusiastically attended by our Junior Members with children as young as 5 years old and many other youngsters who are not Members. We are reinforcing the Clubs core values as a family friendly organisation. Tuesday evenings host 25 to 30+ quite regularly. We now have 16 Juniors with handicaps which means we will be regularly hosting weekend Competitions throughout the 2019 season. This year we hope to encourage many more youngsters to obtain handicaps.

During the course of the Season we play 4 Inter Club matches due to our Membership of the Southport and District Golf Association. This year we play Hillside and Hesketh at home and Southport Old Links and S&A away. Up to now we have enjoyed little success but our Juniors have gained richly in experience. I expect over the next few years as more Juniors obtain handicaps that we will become much more competitive. For the time being it is enough that we are able to field a young and enthusiastic team on each occasion.

The 2018 season ended on Tuesday 28th August with a BBQ and Prize Presentation evening held at the Club. Support for the evening was exceptional with an attendance of 95 in total. Highlights of the evening included our 2018 Junior Captain 14-year-old Holly Philbin being awarded the prize of most improved girl golfer for reducing her handicap from 28 to 18 during the year. The award for Best Girl golfer for 2018 went to 11-year-old Heather Griffiths. Heather, despite being in the process of relocating to North Wales was a regular Tuesday evening attender, a regular Junior team player and a rapidly improving and enthusiastic golfer. Ryan Linford a 14-year-old collected the prize for Best Boy Golfer for 2018. Ryan who joined the Club in November 2017 was the Junior Captain at Southport Golf Academy, he has been a regular Tuesday evening supporter and playing of a handicap of 18 played Number 1 for our Junior Team. This involved Ryan playing the best Junior Golfers in the district including George Holland from S & A, a scratch golfer and England Junior. In each of the matches Ryan played his bravest best, acquitting himself and representing the Club proudly. The Most improved boy of 2018 was 12-year-old Oliver Peacock. Oliver is a rapidly improving golfer due to his sheer determination, enthusiasm and competitive instinct. Playing of a handicap of 26 Oliver was an integral part of our 2018 Junior Team. Other highlights of the evening included best putters Kai Craig and Jessica Galligan. Best under 11-year olds, Evie Warnock, Ellis Brown, Oliver Blake and Oliver Meers. Our thanks go to Carole Halliwell our 2018 Ladies Captain for attending the evening and presenting the prizes.

The 2018 Junior Club Championship took place on Sunday 9th September. This was a closely contested event with 12-year-old 36 handicap Charles Pendleton Nash and 16-year-old 5 Handicap Jake Wiltshire finishing joint 4th with scores of 73, 14-year-old 18 handicap Holly Philbin had a score of 71 for 3rd place, 12-year-old 26 handicap Oliver Peacock was 2nd with an excellent score of 69 but he was pipped at the post by Mia Colford who playing of a handicap of 35 scored a great net 68 to take the Trophy. Oliver and Mia also reduced their handicaps to 33 and 25 respectively.

We have recently started attending the Hurlston Hall Driving Range facility on Sunday mornings. Commencing at 11.30am until 12.30pm our Juniors have their own private area on the range, unlimited golf balls and free coaching from our resident Golf Professional Alison Gray. The cost is a modest  £3 and is proving very popular. This excellent facility allows our Juniors to practice and improve their golf throughout the Winter months in the relative luxury of a covered and sheltered environment. Many thanks go to our Club Council and Hurlston Hall for allowing us to use their facilities.

Our 2019 Tuesday evening season is scheduled to start again on Tuesday 30th April and as always all are welcome. More details will follow in due course.
